Shop Local Week

We’re thinking outside the (big) box as we roll into the holidays and into our next awareness campaign. We’ll be pulling out the stops to engage people in the county and encourage them to consider their spending habits this season and beyond – radio, TV, newspapers, Facebook, YouTube, canvas tote bags, posters and even the billboard on Highway 17!

Our focus will be on Shop Local Week, December 1-8, when we’ll challenge people to choose locally-owned businesses in their spending. Everyone will be eligible to win a prize package simply by e-mailing their pledge to shop at TLF member businesses during Shop Local Week. We’ll enter their names in a drawing to be held at the Egg Nog Mixer on December 8 at KSCO. If their name is drawn and they can produce the requisite local receipts they’ll win one of the gift certificates donated by one of our generous TLF member businesses.

Join the fun, help spread the message and encourage your customers to enter the contest. The e-mail address to join the contest is shoplocal@thinklocalsantacruz.org. (and if you’d like to be one of the contest donors it’s not too late – contact Denise Vivar at davivar@gmail.com).

–

Shop Local and Win

The whole community wins when we shop locally, but this season if you pledge to shop locally during Shop Local Week you can win one of many prizes from local businesses. Here’s how:

Send an email to shoplocal@thinklocalsantacruz.org saying you pledge to shop locally from December 1- 8. Deadline to enter is December 7 at midnight.

2. Save at least one receipt dated that week from one of the 500+ Think Local First member businesses (Visit our Members page to view the list).

We will draw names from the list of pledges at the annual Egg Nog Mixer on December 8. You do not have to be present to win one of the gift packages, but doing so will increase your odds.

This fun and festive mixer will be at KSCO radio station, 2300 Portola Drive, Santa Cruz, from 5:30-7:30pm.

Some of the gift certificates include merchandise or services from:

Listening to the requests of Think Local First and other concerned community members, the Santa Cruz City Council has tabled their proposed local purchasing preference because it was written to include national chains that have a Santa Cruz presence. Don Lane moved to table to ordinance and instead look at offering a 4% preference to locally-owned businesses and only a 2% preference to chains with a local presence. The council unanimously approved the motion.

From the New Rules Project, January 2011

For the fourth year in a row, our national survey of independent businesses has found that those in communities with an active “buy local” campaign run by an Independent Business Alliance or Local First group have experienced markedly stronger revenue growth compared to those located in areas without such an initiative.

The survey, which was conducted over an 8-day period in January, gathered data from 2,768 independent businesses. It found that those in places with a “buy local” campaign reported revenue growth of 5.6% on average in 2010, compared to 2.1% for those elsewhere.

Business owners active in these community initiatives also reported a wide range of benefits, including greater customer loyalty and more awareness of the needs of independent businesses among city officials.
